I am going to post a brief summary of last night's meeting. A more detailed one will follow shortly after I have a chance to get my notes organized.
First off, the camping task force is recommending that the y sell camp Glenburn and move residential camping to a non-existing residential camp facility at Ashburn Lake (Glenn Carpenter Center). They have come to this solution based on reports from two consultants (Ben Davis from a Nova Scotia Y and Catherine Berris & Associates fromVancouver).
This recommendation will be presented to the y board in a final report sometime late june/early july. No notes were taken by representatives of the camping task force, though They assured us our concerns would be included in the report. This was not very reasurring and Glenburn alumni will have an organized contribution to the final report. The board makes a final decision on the future at some unknown point in the future.
The meeting went from 7 - 10 and was attended by about 50 people, most of whom were strongly against selling Glenburn. It would cost a little over a million dollars for an outside group to buy Glenburn. It would cost the Y an estimated 1 - 2 million to fix it up (this cost was too high according to some former y and Glenburn people 'in the know'). Ashburn would cost double or triple that amount to create a camp there (this cost was a very low estimate according to some). Overall, it was a frustrating meeting. Not much info was offered in response to questions but those in charge did well listening to concerns & comments.
