Conflict of interest

It appears that the 1st Vice Chair of the Board (Dale Knox) has a clear conflict of interest in the matters regarding the future of Glenburn and should remove himself from the decision making process. His father-in-law was Glenn Carpenter. Here is an excerpt from his bio on his company's website:

"Mr Knox is also the chairman of the Glenn Carpenter Centre which is a 220 acre property located on Ashburn lake in Saint John which provides summer day camp opportunities for youth in southern NB. "

You can check it out here:

I'm not sure this will be very reassuring to people who are concerned about bias in this decision making process. If you agree, feel free to email the board members at the emails listed below and if you have any other emails for people listed below, post them here and we can get a complete list.

well, I guess that's where the "show me the money" comment stems from. His whole tone reeked of self interest. What it said to me was "We are going to abandon Glenburn and if you want to get a side project to save it then go right ahead". After that point, I understood just how little impartiality exists in this decision making process.

The sad part is that a few peoples' slanted, self-serving interests are going to alienate an entire community built by the YMCA and hamper any kind of capital campaign they try to run. You can bet that there will be media attention for the issue if the decision goes badly. In the long run it won't just hurt the alumni, it will hurt the Saint John Y financially, and retard the development of youth programs they are trying to put in place.

It also seems to me that Dale Knox is in a conflict of interest. The Y's Board of Directors will make the final decision on the future of Glenburn. Since Dale Knox has a personal, vested interest in the Carpenter Centre, he should excuse himself from the entire decision making process. I think we should also ask if all members of the Board of Directors and the Camp Task Force have declared any conflicts of interest.

Yup, I also have a bit of a problem with the other 3 members of the Camping Task Force who are also Board members. I would think that would create a significant conflict between acting as a recommending body and a deciding body. That makes 4 out of a possible 12 members who appear to have some sort of conflict of interest.
